Color Outside the Lines- How to Approach Paint Differently

A room is typically defined by its walls: four flat planes that intersect with flooring and a ceiling. When it’s dumbed down, it can feel rather boring. At some point there will be a debate about the finishes. Paint? Or wallpaper? Will the walls and trims match with a single color (v. classy), or should they contrast for more definition? Of course, if you’re feeling spicy there could be an accent wall.

Let’s not be confined by these lines. Let’s push the envelope a bit further…

What if we treated walls like an open canvas and played with the geometry? This may feel a bit avant-garde, but color blocking extends the boundaries and allow a room to make statement. The key is to be deliberate in the application. Take a look and tell us what you think:

Monochromatic Paint Palettes

Author: Sydney Piwowar

Something designers across the board talk a lot about is color depth. Whether that is in space, graphics, photography, fashion, etc. it is all very similar. In interiors, people often confuse color depth with having lots of colors. The more is not always merrier people! These monochromatic palettes have me falling in LOVE. Despite each room essentially being painted shades of the exact same color, it creates a sense of visual and architectural depth to a space in a way that just painting it all one color wont do. Take a look at these Inso images to see for your self!

I absolutely love the way these different paint colors highlight the architectural significance of this wall. Traditionally, people would choose a floral wallpaper to pop in these panels. I have never been a fan for the obvious choices though - be bold, be different.

This picture needs no introduction. What a great way to highlight the unique arch of the ceiling without drawing the attention up and away from the bathroom features.

Top 5 Trim Options that AREN'T White

Author: Sydney Piwowar

Contrast trim became famous for providing non-contractor grade options for trim. It was a missed opportunity for years to provide another aspect of color and depth to space. Rather than just picking the base grade or what ever is cheapest at Home Depot, we encourage you to put an interesting spin on a building necessity. Here are our current Top 5 Favorite Contrast Trim Colors now.

1. Classy Black

We have all heard of the black trim trend at this point. At JTD, we appreciate the unique ways people are using black in space. Here is a great space where the designer chose to trim a unique white wallpaper with black.

2. Calming Grey

Although providing a visual contrast, this soft grey brings a sense of comfort into the space.

3. Eclectic Green

We love the way this emerald toned trim compliments the original stained glass windows. This is a great way to modernize traditional spaces.

4. Pretty In Pink

If your kids are anything like I was, they constantly want to update their room. An easy, non permanent way to do that is to paint trim. No need for painting or wallpapering whole walls.

5. Buoyant Blue

This soft, baby blue paint color was pulled to compliment the paper pattern.

Look Up — Attention Seeking Bold Ceilings

Author: Sydney Piwowar

Growing up, my mother told me that as people, we have the tendency to look down a lot. She said to look up and it will give you a whole new perspective on the world. Design is similar. It is not limited to what sits on the floor in front of you and the walls around us -  it includes the ceiling too! At JTD, we do not limit ourselves in this way, we consider the entire architecture of the space when designing.

We have curated a few of our favorite ceiling installations that are begging for your attention. These show stoppers will inspire you to start looking up. Let us know what you think of these inspiring, bold moves! Do you have the guts?
